Scotland: The Culture of Books and Reading
For my second honors experience, I decided to travel with the University of Cincinnati Honors program to Edinburgh, Scotland with the Culture of Books and Reading Honors class. My experience traveling through the honors program was incredible. When I try to sit down and say what all I learned while I was there and what all I took from the trip, words do not seem to do the experience justice. I've done plenty of traveling before including Costa Rica, Canada, and Hawaii, but each new place brings something unique to the table and gives me a little bit better of an understanding of just how big the world really is.
We left for Edinburgh on Friday March 14th, worked Monday through Thursday, and returned Saturday March 22nd. The first thing I noticed getting off the plane was how green the grass was. It was just a totally different setting. Other than having the same language (Although at times it didn't seem like it lol!), everything was different. I also could be vegetarian if I lived there. I tried haggis and various meats and didn't like any of them! Other than the meats, I really loved everything about Scotland. I loved the people and the shops and the clothes and the culture and their accents. And I literally got addicted to their Kitkats. In case you didn't know, Kitkats (my favorite candy) in Europe are Nestle rather than Hershey and taste so much better!
My favorite things were running/climbing Arthur's Seat and the night life. During the trip, I was still marathon training, so on my long run day I decided to run/climb Arthur's Seat (pictured below). A group of us went and it really was a journey! At the top, it was so windy you couldn't even stand up. They had positioned a pillar for people to put their arms around to be able to "stand."
I absolutely loved the trip and Scotland was breathtakingly beautiful. I fit right in to the culture and life there and would move there in a heartbeat if I could. If you are an honors student at the University of Cincinnati reading this, I would highly recommend this trip! Additional details about the trip can be found on the honors website.
